Rosemary's sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founded the Special Olympics in 1960 in honor of her sister and many others just like her. "Rosemary was one of the kinds of people who I wanted to see more of in sports." Unlike her family, Rosemary lived a much quieter, longer, and simpler life than most of her siblings. When she did pass away in 2005, she received one incredible send-off. Rosemary Kennedy died at the age of 86 surrounded by her remaining four siblings, Eunice, Patricia, Ted, and Jean Kennedy.

Her family life, however, was filled with more turmoil than the bombs dropped around the world at the time. Her life was the battlefield, her birth was just the beginning of it. Her parents were big political figures in a world of politics and everything about them had to present the imitation of perfection and power to the American people. Joseph and Rose Kennedy were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their third child, and their first daughter to come into the world.

Her arrival, however, turned out to be rather “inconvenient” and nurses ordered Rose to "keep the baby's head in'' until she could be helped as doctors had other, more severe cases to attend to. At the time of her birth, there was not only a war happening but the vicious epidemic known as the Spanish Flu was also in full swing.
The Devastating Consequences Following the Nurse’s Decision to Keep Rosemary Inside the Birth Canal Longer Than Nature Intended
The consequences the nurse's decision had on Rosemary's life were disastrous. With no one to facilitate the birth, the nurse ordered Rosemary's mother to keep the baby's head in until the birth could finally be overseen. Baby Rosemary's head was kept in the birth canal for two whole agonizing hours before Rose opened her legs for Rosemary to come out. This caused her oxygen supply to be cut off as well as interfered with her blood flow.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell you that these are the two most important things for the healthy development of an infant, especially during birth. All the prayers in the world could not save Rosemary from the terrible fate she was now faced with. The family hoped for a healthy baby girl but it was too late.

The Kennedys Had No Time For Failure, Especially When They Carried the Kennedy Family Name
The Kennedys were a prestigious family who put a lot of pressure on their children to be "perfect". When you look at their three sons, President John F Kennedy, senator Robert Kennedy, and Senator Ted Kennedy, one understands the level of excellence the Kennedys were expecting. Unfortunately, it didn't matter how well they groomed Rosemary, she was different.

She was falling behind rapidly with the fundamentals of early childhood development. Basic milestones like crawling and talking were almost non-existent by the age of two. Rosemary was certainly showing signs that she was not like her three brothers. In fear of what it might do to their family name and inferior image, they did not react compassionately toward Rosemary Kennedy. They punished her for their own mistakes and for things the young child could not change.

They Never Opened Up About Rosemary’s Alarming Lack of Childhood Development
One could argue that the lack of information concerning mental illnesses or disabilities pushed the family to hide Rosemary's condition. Unfortunately, looking at the pristine image they tried to uphold, we can only assume that they didn't want anyone knowing about the Kennedys producing an "imperfect" child. They did have the choice of opening up about their struggles and seeking professional help, but instead, they hid Rosemary like a dirty secret.

Rose Kennedy never spoke to anyone about her daughter and no one knew about the child's struggles they were facing. This, of course, only grew worse over time. It was only the beginning of the many dreadful events that followed. Before it got completely out of hand, Rose gave birth to a total of nine children. The dinner table was soon packed with a big family and lots of banter.
