🇺🇸 EXPOSED: GoFundMe Caught Auto-Creating Over a Million Fake “Nonprofit” Pages — and Taking a Cut
🚨 In a stunning new report, ABC7’s Seven On Your Side confirmed what many Americans have long suspected — GoFundMe has quietly created over one million donation pages for nonprofits that never signed up, collecting money and tips in their name without permission.
The company admitted it built 1.4 million “nonprofit” fundraiser pages using IRS data and PayPal Giving Fund records — all without asking the actual charities.
“One of our patrons wanted to make a donation in someone’s name,” said Dave Dornblaser, treasurer for Friends of the San Bruno Public Library. “They found a GoFundMe page tied to the library’s nonprofit — and it’s something we did not set up. We weren’t sure what was going on.”
Turns out, GoFundMe made the page itself.
And Dornblaser wasn’t alone. His other organization, the San Bruno Amateur Radio Club, also had a page created without consent.
“The fact that they would just, on their own, build pages for nonprofits that they’ve never spoken to is a problem,” Dornblaser told ABC7. “I’m a believer in opt-in, not opt-out.”
GoFundMe’s Senior Director of Nonprofit Communications, Krista Lampe, admitted to the practice:
“We were finding that people were already coming to GoFundMe to support nonprofit organizations,” Lampe said. “So we made it easy for nonprofits to connect with our community of over 200 million.”
Translation: if you run a charity, GoFundMe might’ve already created a page in your name — without your knowledge — and started accepting donations.
Even worse, donors are encouraged to “tip” GoFundMe up to 16.5%, on top of the company’s 2.2% to 2.9% transaction fee per donation.
“They say, ‘We’re doing this and we’re great people, and give us 14.5 percent to do this,’ which doesn’t have to happen,” said Dornblaser. “That’s what bothers me.”
After ABC7 got involved, GoFundMe finally removed the unauthorized pages. But the scandal raises serious questions about how much money was raised — and where it all went.
For a company that built its brand on “helping people,” it now looks like GoFundMe was helping itself to America’s generosity.
This isn’t fundraising — it’s digital identity theft disguised as charity. 💸
I will have less of a presence on The Torrid Tribe Community. We have very little activity here. This is a sign to me that members have found other social media resources that they are spending more time in. I am happy to see less censorship on social media in general. I started The Torrid Tribe 4 years ago when we were in a state of censorship and lockdowns. It was a difficult time and this was a haven and sanctuary for so many.
I will be lightly posting things here to give you all content to see. This community will always be open to everyone and will resurrect to its full capacity if subscribers show they want it fully operational again with full time administration.
Thank you for being a part of this community. Sending each of you hugs.
