That glossy neon red cherry sitting on top of your ice cream sundae didn't get its bright color from nature 🍒

Most people assume maraschino cherries are just fresh red cherries preserved in sweet syrup. But the standard industry method behind that bright topper is actually an intense chemical overhaul that strips the fruit down to a blank canvas first.

Right after harvesting—mostly sweet varieties like Royal Ann or Rainier—commercial processors drop the fresh cherries straight into a concentrated chemical brine containing sulfur dioxide and calcium hydroxide. This sulfur dioxide solution completely bleaches out all the natural red pigments and anthocyanins, turning the cherry ghostly white. At the same time, the calcium hardens the fruit's cell walls so it doesn't turn into total mush during the heavy industrial soaking process.

Once the cherry is bleached chalk-white and firm, they thoroughly wash out the sulfur chemical. Then comes the second half of the recipe: soaking those white cherries in giant vats of high-fructose corn syrup mixed with synthetic food dyes like Red No. 40 (or Red No. 3) and artificial almond flavoring. The fruit literally absorbs the red petroleum dye straight to its core to give you that uniform, hyper-bright color that stays vibrant for years on store shelves.

This isn't a niche technique either—around 75% of all commercial maraschino cherries sold across U.S. grocery chains and bar supply networks follow this exact bleaching and re-dyeing process under standard FDA identity guidelines.

Look for jars explicitly labeled "Naturally Colored" or "Bordeaux Cherries" at the grocery store. Authentic specialty versions use natural fruit juices like dark sweet cherry or black carrot juice for color without using sulfur dioxide bleach or petroleum dyes.

Have you ever noticed how different a real dark sweet cherry tastes compared to a jarred ice cream cherry?

I will have less of a presence on The Torrid Tribe Community. We have very little activity here. This is a sign to me that members have found other social media resources that they are spending more time in. I am happy to see less censorship on social media in general. I started The Torrid Tribe 4 years ago when we were in a state of censorship and lockdowns. It was a difficult time and this was a haven and sanctuary for so many.

I will be lightly posting things here to give you all content to see. This community will always be open to everyone and will resurrect to its full capacity if subscribers show they want it fully operational again with full time administration.

Thank you for being a part of this community. Sending each of you hugs.
